Artist Statement
I would describe “creature media” as any movie, TV show, book, or illustrated novel that revolves around mythological, fantastical, or cryptic creatures. Creature media has always influenced my work; especially The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairy Journal by Cicely Mary Barker, andThe Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Creatures that consistently make appearances in my work are fairies, mermaids, and vampires.
Vampires don’t have to be the same dark, gloomy character every time they’re depicted. The idea behind my thesis was to take the undead, blood-sucking characters I love and create a space to display them together, as if they were pages from a field guide of vampires. By organizing a visual collection where all of these vampires can exist side by side, I am creating an opportunity to demonstrate the differences between various members of the vampire race through digital illustration.
